Alarming rise in cardiac cases in Gujarat

There has been a steep rise in the number of heart attacks in the country. Videos doing rounds on social media of young and seemingly fit people dying of heart attacks at gyms, at wedding functions has been on a rise. But on July 3, a shocking incident came to light where a 15-year-old boy, Devansh Bhayani, collapsed on the school stage on the outskirts of Rajkot while preparing for a Guru Purnima function. While, in a separate incident, another boy succumed to a heart ailment in Junagadh, on the same date.

A few months back, a top cardiologist from Jamnagar, Dr Gaurav Gandhi, who performed more than 16,000 heart surgeries, died of a heart attack on June 6. This incident had also shocked the country about how a cardiologist himself was at such a high risk. In the last two years, there has been an alarming rise in the number of heart attacks, not only among adults but also among children.

Seven cardiac emergency calls received every hour

According to a report from the 108 EMRI emergency services 108, there have been 29,417 cardiac emergency calls in Gujarat till June this year. So, every day, about 163 calls are received regarding cardiac issues. Last year, there were an average of 135 cardiac emergency calls per day.

The reported data of the number of patients admitted to private and government hospitals with cardiac problems reveals that more than 10 people on average face cardiac problems every hour in Gujarat.

Doctor’s advice

Dr Jayesh Prajapati of the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology & Research Centre, Ahmedabad, suggests that one should immediately contact emergency services in case of any problem in breathing, followed by exertion if there is a family history of heart attack, or if the heart rate seems to be irregular.
