1.74 lakh cases pending in Gujarat High Court, 19.67 lakh in lower courts

In what remains a challenge to judicial system in the state, the Gujarat High High Court has 1.74 lakh pending cases and the lower courts in the state stand on 19.67 lakh pending cases. Across India, there are 63.61 lakh cases pending in the high courts and 82,755 cases pending with the Supreme Court.
The lack of staff in the court premises combined with slow-moving cases has factored into the high number of pending cases across the country, including Gujarat.
As of March 9, there are 1,16,691 civil and 57,849 criminal cases pending in the Gujarat High Court, as per the report. Talking about district and subordinate courts, Gujarat has 3,25,786 civil cases and 16,41,937 criminal cases pending.
The report states that across India, the Allahabad High Court has the highest number of cases awaiting for the decision with 11.93 lakh unresolved cases, whereas Rajasthan High Court has 6.71 lakh and Bombay High Court has 6.62 lakh pending cases.
