1,71,325 women opted for abortion from 2016 to 2022, stated data reported by the central government. The report was shared by the state Congress party. 

Every year, approximately 25,000 legal abortions are recorded in the state. Women opt for abortions due to a lack of family planning and proper treatments, poor social conditions, and physical illness.

In 2021-22 ,13,65,096 women underwent abortions in India.

Congress spokesperson, Hiren Banker, commented on the worrisome and alarming numbers of abortions, saying that these numbers are official and provided by the union government in the parliament. However, the actual numbers might be higher.

Despite the state spending ₹288 cr on the Mukhyamantri Matrushakti Yojana, the alarmingly high numbers of abortions are a matter of concern.
