1,000 homes face demolition over road project in Chandlodiya, residents protest

Ahead of the upcoming Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) election, the civic body is facing strong opposition from residents over a proposed road-widening project on Arya Samaj Road in Chandlodiya.
The civic body’s plan is likely to impact around 1,000 houses, triggering fear and anger among locals who claim they may lose their homes. Residents allege that many families have been living in the area since the days of the nagar panchayat, and now face the threat of displacement.
The controversy has surfaced just days before polling scheduled on April 26, potentially posing a challenge for the ruling party. Locals have questioned the timing of the move, saying such a major decision should not be pushed during the election period.
Authorities had completed the demarcation process on Arya Samaj Road nearly three months ago as part of a joint exercise involving the municipal corporation and the Railways under a town planning scheme. Markings have already been placed, indicating the extent of the proposed road expansion.
Residents have demanded that either the extent of demolition be reduced or alternative housing arrangements be provided. Many have expressed concern over their future, questioning where they would go if their long-standing homes are removed.
A former councillor has also stepped in, stating that representations have been made to the authorities to protect the homes of affected families. Efforts are being sought to revise the road design in a way that minimises displacement.
