A 50-year-old farmer was shot in the right leg after a dispute over a Garba sound system escalated into violence in Varsoda village of Gandhinagar district’s Mansa taluka.
The injured man, Arvindsinh Himmatsinh Chavda, was taken to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for treatment. Mansa police have registered a case against eight people, including four identified suspects, and launched an investigation.
Garba Sound System Dispute Turns Violent
Chavda, who lives near the Ambaji Mata temple in Varsoda, earns his living through farming. On October 18, a Garba event was organised in the village, during which his nephew, Vipulsinh, installed a sound system.
According to the complaint, four villagers, Digvijaysinh Ghanshyamsinh Chavda, Jaydeepsinh Ramansinh Chavda, Adirajsinh Ghanshyamsinh Chavda and Rahulsinh Jeevansinh Chavda — objected to the sound system, leading to an argument.
Accused Allegedly Open Fire After Police Call
On the evening of October 20, the four named accused allegedly gathered behind a dairy in the village. Chavda’s nephew called the emergency number 112 to alert the police, but the men reportedly left before officers arrived.
At around 8.30 pm, the four named suspects allegedly returned to Chavda’s house with four unidentified accomplices. The complaint states that Digvijaysinh was carrying a gun, while the others had iron pipes and rods.
The accused allegedly fired three rounds at Chavda. The first two missed, but the third, fired from close range, struck his right leg.
Chavda fell to the ground with a gunshot wound. When his brother reached the spot, the accused allegedly threatened to kill him if he reported them again before fleeing.
Farmer Taken to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital
The injured farmer was initially taken to the emergency department in Gandhinagar before being shifted to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital in an ambulance operated through the 108 emergency service.
Mansa police registered a case against the four named suspects and four unidentified people based on the complaint. Further investigation is under way.
One Accused Previously Booked in Mining Case
Police have also found that Digvijaysinh Chavda was previously booked in a case linked to an alleged attack on a team that included district geologist Pranav Singh.
The case was registered in February this year after the accused allegedly chased the team in an attempt to attack its members. The latest incident has intensified tensions in Varsoda, where a dispute over Garba music has escalated into a shooting.
