In a separate reply, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said all damaged National Highway sections reported over the last three years had been attended to for immediate maintenance or restoration to traffic-worthy condition.
The government said maintenance of the existing National Highway network has been prioritised, with repairs of potholes and upkeep of road markings and signage carried out through accountable maintenance agencies.
Road safety audits are also mandatory at various stages of National Highway projects, including design, construction, pre-opening and operation and maintenance.
20,000 Km Maintenance Plan For 2026-27
India currently has around 1.46 lakh km of National Highways, according to the government.
Of this, around 36,000 km is under development, 58,000 km is under the Defect Liability Period or concession period, and 41,000 km is under maintenance primarily through Short Term Maintenance Contracts and Performance Based Maintenance Contracts. Another 4,000 km is maintained departmentally through the Border Roads Organisation.
The government has decided to take up maintenance of 20,000 km during 2026-27 as part of its plan to move towards 100 per cent maintenance coverage of the National Highway network.
