Calm Before the Storm: Today, just the drizzle, Tomorrow Gujarat Braces for Massive Downpour

Gujarat witnessed a deceptive lull on Thursday, with light, passing showers trickling over just 27 talukas. But the brief respite is about to end sharply. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe Red Alert forecasting extremely heavy rainfall across vast swathes of the state from Friday through Sunday, prompting district administrations to hit the emergency button, close educational institutions, and cancel all staff leaves.

Light Drizzle Covers 27 Talukas in 12-Hour Stretch

Data released by the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) in Gandhinagar shows that precipitation remained localized and mild through Thursday daytime. Kaprada in Valsad district topped the state charts with a modest 27 mm (1.06 inches) of rain, followed by The Dangs at 14 mm.

For most of the state, the weather barely registered as a monsoon event. Exactly 18 out of the 27 rain-hit talukas—representing two-thirds of all affected pockets—registered light drizzles under 5 mm. Central and northern areas saw only fleeting damp spells, offering little hints of the deluge heading toward western India over the weekend.

IMD Issues Red Alert for Friday to Sunday

The atmospheric tranquillity is set to shatter on Friday morning. Active synoptic weather systems developing over the region have forced meteorologists to sound an urgent Red Alert for critical districts, including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Anand, Bharuch, Surat, Narmada, Tapi, Dangs, and Navsari.

Forecasters warn of torrential, exceptionally heavy rain accompanied by strong squally winds and severe lightning. Municipalities across major urban hubs are preparing for potential flash flooding, severe waterlogging in low-lying neighbourhoods, and swollen river basins as the monsoon system peaks over the weekend.

Emergency Protocols Activated: Schools Shut, Staff Leaves Axed

Taking no risks ahead of the forecasted storm, the Gujarat state government has activated top-level emergency disaster protocols:

• Mass Leave Cancellation: All leaves for key administrative personnel, revenue officers, municipal staff, and emergency management crews have been revoked immediately to ensure round-the-clock readiness.
• School and College Shutdown: District Collectors in high-vulnerability regions—including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Anand, and Kheda—have ordered a total shutdown of all government and private schools, colleges, ITIs, and coaching centres for Friday, 31 July.
• NDRF and SDRF Deployment: Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed into high-risk coastal and low-lying districts for immediate rescue and relief operations.

Local authorities have urged citizens to stay indoors, avoid non-essential road travel, and strictly monitor official weather bulletins as the severe spell unfolds.
