Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun’ to re-release in India to mark 40th anniversary

Actor Tom Cruise’s ‘Top gun’ is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and as part of the anniversary, the film that turned Cruise into a superstar, is set to re-release in India, the actor-producer announced on social media.

As per the announcement, the 1986 blockbuster as well as its 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, is all set to re-release, for a special one-week-only theatrical run.

“If you feel the need…Two films. One big screen. Back in theaters, May 13th, for one week only,” Cruise posted alongside a trailer post.

Top Gun became a massive box office hit, emerging as the highest-grossing film of 1986 worldwide. It also earned critical acclaim, winning both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for the song “Take My Breath Away,” performed by the American band Berlin.

Earlier this month, Cruise announced that he will return as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in Top Gun 3, which is currently in production. The announcement was also made by Paramount Pictures at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Released in 1986, Top Gun became a groundbreaking hit, showcasing high-intensity aerial combat, thrilling dogfights, and the glamorous lives of the US Navy pilots. The story centers on a group of elite aviators training at the Fighter Weapons School known as Top Gun, where they push both their skills and their aircraft to the limit in a fierce bid to be the best.

Starring Tom Cruise in a career-defining role, the film helped cement his status as a major box-office star of the 1980s. Directed by the late Tony Scott, the movie also featured notable performances by Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Kelly McGillis, Meg Ryan, and Tom Skerritt in supporting roles.
