Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has approached the Karnataka High Court seeking to quash a criminal case registered against him over his imitation of the Daiva portrayal from the film ‘Kantara’, as per reports.

Singh’s legal team reportedly argued that his remarks were misinterpreted and that he had no intention of hurting anyone’s sentiments. According to his counsel, the actor was simply expressing admiration for Rishab Shetty’s performance and the powerful characterisation in the film. The defence claimed that his appreciation has been unfairly given a criminal colour.

The lawyer also informed the court that the police have already issued two notices to Singh in connection with the matter. They said the actor is facing unnecessary stress and pressure due to ongoing proceedings, noted the reports.

The council's request to same day hearing was also rejected by the court.

The controversy began at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 in Goa. Singh re-enacted a Daiva moment from Kantara: Chapter 1 while praising Rishab Shetty and recalling the film’s impact on him.

Although Shetty appeared to laugh during the event, sections of social media later criticised Singh for allegedly being insensitive to the spiritual and cultural significance of Daiva. Many objected to the Daiva being described as a “ghost,” pointing out that Daivas are revered forest deities.

After another clip surfaced showing Shetty cautioning him against mimicking the performance, the backlash intensified online. Singh later issued a public apology, stating that he had no intention of hurting religious sentiments.
