MTV to shut down five channels after four decades

After ruling the music scene for over 40 years, MTV has announced that it will be closing all its dedicated music channels, according to reports.
The move marks the end of an era for those who grew up in the 1990s and early 2000s a time when MTV was a daily staple for music lovers, often playing in the background after school or during early mornings.
Paramount Global, MTV’s parent company, reportedly announced on Sunday that it will discontinue MTV 80s, MTV Music, Club MTV, MTV 90s, and MTV Live. However, MTV HD Reality will continue to operate and will focus on airing reality shows.
The company cited changing audience habits as the main reason behind the decision, noting that most music consumption has now shifted to YouTube and social media platforms, according to reports.
This announcement comes just months after Paramount Global’s merger with Skydance Media, which reportedly initiated a $500 million global cost-cutting plan.
The news has sparked nostalgia among longtime fans, especially those who grew up watching MTV’s golden years.
One user wrote, “Oh wow, this is kind of sad. I still remember their debut!”
Another commented, “They would probably do well if they just went back to what they used to be. But what do I know?”
Others expressed similar sentiments, with one user saying, “Kids these days will never know the feeling of having MTV Music playing on TV,” and another adding, “Real ones remember having the MTV music channel on in the background.”
