Mirzapur The Movie Gets A Certificate After CBFC Cuts 35 Seconds, Mutes Cuss Words

Mirzapur The Movie has received an A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) ahead of its September 4 theatrical release, with certification details showing changes to intimate scenes, abusive language and some dialogue.

The film has been cleared with a runtime of 197 minutes and 19 seconds, or 3 hours, 17 minutes and 19 seconds. The certification process included several modifications before the film was approved for theatrical release.

CBFC Orders Changes to Intimate Scenes

According to the certification details reported by India Today, the CBFC directed the makers to reduce the impact of intimate scenes by 50 per cent through changes to both visuals and sound.

The modifications were made to two sequences, one before the interval and another in the second half of the film. The certification details indicate that around 35 seconds of intimate content was removed.

The changes come as the popular Mirzapur franchise makes its transition from streaming to the big screen, with the film carrying forward the gritty tone and characters associated with the original series.

Cuss Words Muted at Four Places

The CBFC also directed the filmmakers to modify abusive language in several portions of the film.

Cuss words were reportedly muted at four places, while abusive words were replaced at six other points. Some dialogues were also altered following the certification review.

One word in the first half was replaced with “kamar”, while “lanth”, meaning idiot, was changed in the second half. The board also sought a modification to a caste-related reference.

No Cuts to Violent Scenes

Despite the changes to intimate content and language, the certification process did not require cuts to the film's violent or gory sequences.

That decision is notable given the franchise's reputation for graphic violence and its dark portrayal of crime, power struggles and gang rivalries.

The film will retain much of the hard-edged atmosphere associated with the Mirzapur universe when it reaches cinemas.

Makers' Source Disputes Reports of Cuts

There is, however, a difference between the certification details and the account provided by a source close to the film.

A source close to the production told India Today that the theatrical version was cleared with “hardly any modifications” and maintained that there were no cuts to the film.

The source also disputed reports about roughly 35 seconds of footage being removed, saying the changes were limited and did not affect the filmmakers' intended version.

The source claimed that audiences would still experience the theatrical adaptation in the form intended by the makers, including its raw tone.

Film Heads to Cinemas on September 4

Mirzapur The Movie is directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna. It is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment, with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani serving as co-producers.

The film features Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Jitendra Kumar, Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Dugal, Mohit Malik, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Harshita Shekhar Gaur and Shweta Tripathi, among others.

The film is scheduled to release in cinemas on September 4, with its A certificate restricting theatrical viewing to adult audiences.
