‘Michael’ biopic breaks opening records globally despite mixed reviews, earns $217 m in opening weekend

The biographical film Michael, based on the life of pop icon Michael Jackson, has delivered a record-breaking performance at the global box office, despite facing mixed critical reception and production hurdles.
The film reportedly earned $217 million (over ₹2,000 crore) worldwide in its opening week, setting a new record for the biggest opening ever for a biopic. In doing so, it surpassed the opening figures of Oppenheimer ($180.4 million) and Bohemian Rhapsody ($124 million).
However, the film has seen a clear divide between critics and audiences. While viewers have responded positively, critics have raised concerns over the limited portrayal of controversies surrounding Jackson’s life, which has impacted its rating on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes.
One of the film’s highlights has been the performance of Jaafar Jackson, nephew of Michael Jackson, whose portrayal of the singer has received widespread appreciation. Reacting to the film’s success, Lionsgate chairman Adam Fogelson reportedly said the global response has exceeded expectations, with audiences across age groups connecting emotionally with the story.
The film’s production was marked by significant challenges. After initial shooting was completed, the makers reportedly had to rework a major portion of the third act, which originally dealt with allegations against Jackson, including the Jordan Chandler case. Due to legal constraints, those elements could not be included, leading to reshoots that cost an additional $50 million.
Director Antoine Fuqua ultimately chose to conclude the film’s narrative in 1988, a period before the major controversies in Jackson’s life emerged. Following the film’s strong commercial performance, discussions around a potential sequel and further instalments are already underway.
