Veteran British actor John Nolan, uncle of acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan and screenwriter Jonathan Nolan, has died at the age of 87.

His death was reported on April 11 by the Stratford-upon-Avon Herald. The cause of death has not been disclosed. Tributes have since poured in from fans and members of the film and theatre community.

Paying tribute, Christopher Nolan described his uncle as a formative influence on his creative life. He said John Nolan was “the first artist I knew” and credited him with shaping his understanding of acting and artistic expression.

John Nolan enjoyed a distinguished career spanning several decades across theatre, television and film. He trained with the Royal Shakespeare Company and later performed at the National Theatre under director Trevor Nunn. His early stage work included productions such as ‘Julius Caesar’, ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’ and ‘The Relapse’.

He gained wider recognition on television through the BBC miniseries ‘Daniel Deronda’ (1970) and appeared in a number of popular series, including ‘Doomwatch’ and ‘Shabby Tiger’.

Nolan also collaborated with his nephew on several film projects, including Following and Dunkirk. He portrayed Wayne Enterprises board member Douglas Fredericks in ‘Batman Begins’ and reprised the role in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’.

Among his notable television roles was John Greer in Person of Interest, created by Jonathan Nolan. His other screen credits included ‘The Prisoner’, ‘The Sweeney’ and ‘Silent Witness’.

Born John Francis Nolan on 22 May 1938 in London, he was the younger brother of Brendan Nolan, father of Christopher and Jonathan Nolan.

He is survived by his wife, actress Kim Hartman, their children Miranda and Tom, and grandchildren Dylan and Kara.
