Matthew Perry, the 54-year-old American-Canadian actor best known for playing the character of Chandler Bing in the popular sitcom ‘Friends’, was reportedly found dead at his Los Angeles residence today.
Multiple reports suggest that Perry died of drowning in the hot tub, and no foul play was involved. The authorities have started further investigation.
On the sad demise of the actor, one cannot help but remember the memorable moments he was a part of with the 10-season-long show as Chandler Bing.
The one with the blackout
As New York City experiences a blackout, Matthew Perry’s character, Chandler Bing, is stuck in an ATM vestibule. To his amusement, he is stuck with Jill Goodacre, a model.
Chandler then calls up his friends at Monica’s apartment to break the news. However, when Monica doesn’t understand what he is mumbling under his breath, Joey understands what Chandler is trying to say.
A perfect example of how Perry made his awkwardness funny on camera, accompanied by the brilliant writing of the show such as, “Gum would be perfection” from the same episode.
The one with Chandler in a box
Such was the character of Chandler Bing that he didn’t have to be on screen all the time to make it funny. Proving his friendship with Joey, this time, the ‘Transponster’ was in a box.
According to Chandler, the purpose of the box was three-fold- it gave him the time to think about what he did, it proved how much he cared about his friend Joey, and it hurt.
Even with him not being on the screen, the character, and subsequently Perry as an actor, was still able to make a mark on the episode, almost being central to it without being there.
The one with the embryos
As Phoebe is trying to get pregnant, Rachel and Monica are fed up with the chick/rooster’s morning noises. The friends get into an argument about who knows whom better.
Ross, being a natural anchor, makes a game out of it. The stakes- If Rachel and Monica lose, they give their apartment to Chandler and Joey, if the boys lose, they get rid of the chick/rooster.
What follows is the game night everyone would like to be a part of, where you see Chandler’s dance as he wins the apartment, and Rachel’s immortal guess as ‘Transponster’.
And that, is not even a word.
The one where Heckles dies
The cranky neighbour downstairs, Mr Heckles, who always complains about the noise that the girls make, dies suddenly. Going through his stuff, Chandler finds out about the similarities they share.
It showed a vulnerable side to the ‘class clown’ who feared that he was going to be alone and die that way just like Heckles. However, after a lot of panic, he realises that he doesn’t have to be like the cranky neighbour and he can change that.
A very different character exploration, done by the show still keeping the humour on the same level, was a treat to watch, especially for Perry’s ‘supposably’ remark.
At the end of the episode, he closes the door to Heckles’ home, saying, “Goodbye Mr Heckles, we will try to keep it down.”
The one with the birth mother
The last season of the show brought out the best of Chandler’s moments, this time an emotional/serious one. A depth that this comic character had never gone before.
Monica and Chandler had lied about their occupation to convince a potential surrogate, Erica, to give them the baby. However, when Erica finds out about the lies and storms off, Chandler tries to convince her.
In one of the longest scenes in the sitcom without a joke, Chandler tells Erica how much the baby means to the couple and comes back to Monica with good news.
Matthew Perry, as an actor, got the chance to show his range there, and he grabbed it with both hands.
As we say goodbye to the revered character and the actor who played it, let these episodes celebrate his legacy. He was not great at the advice, but he can surely interest you with a sarcastic comment.
