Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap faces Surat court action over remarks on Brahmins

A Surat court has ordered criminal proceedings against Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap over allegedly objectionable remarks made against the Brahmin community on social media platform X.
Judicial Magistrate Akshaykumar S Jani, after examining the complaint, digital evidence and legal aspects of the case, directed that proceedings be initiated against Kashyap under Sections 196, 352 and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges relate to promoting communal enmity, intentional insult likely to disturb public peace and statements that could threaten public order.
According to the complaint, protests were held by members of the Brahmin community on April 16, 2025 against certain scenes in a Hindi film trailer. Following the backlash, Kashyap allegedly posted remarks from his official X account targeting the Brahmin community. The complaint also accuses him of abusing social media users who opposed the post.
The complaint was filed by Surat-based social activist Kamlesh Rawal. Though Kashyap later issued a public apology on social media after the controversy escalated, the complainant claimed there was no satisfactory response to a legal notice sent to the filmmaker.
After recording the complainant’s statement and reviewing the digital evidence submitted, the court ordered further legal process, including summons and warrant proceedings.
