Director duo of hit film 'K-Pop Demon Hunters’ signed for sequel by Netflix

Netflix has signed a deal with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans to develop a sequel to their 2025 blockbuster animated film ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’.
According to Netflix’s statement, the sequel will mark the first project under Netflix’s exclusive multi-year writing and directing partnership with Kang and Appelhans across animation.
Kang said she felt proud that audiences wanted more from the story and its characters. “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. This is only the beginning,” she said.
Appelhans added that the characters had become deeply personal to the creative team. “These characters are like family to us, and their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve, while continuing to push the boundaries of how music, animation and storytelling can come together,” he said.
Blending elements of K-pop music, action and Korean mythology, the film follows Rumi, Mira and Zoey, members of the globally famous K-pop girl group HUNTR/X, who secretly lead double lives as demon hunters. While maintaining their celebrity status through concerts and performances, the trio use the power of music and teamwork to protect the world from supernatural forces.
In the story, they face a formidable rival in the Saja Boys, an apparently charming boy band that is in fact made up of demons in disguise.
The film broke streaming records on the platform, while its soundtrack produced chart-topping songs including “Golden”. It is currently nominated for two Academy Awards — Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
