Dev Anand: The ageless romantic who pioneered Bollywood’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ initiative

Updated: Sep 26th, 2024

Dev Anand, who would have turned 101 today, remains an iconic figure in Indian cinema, not only for his on-screen charisma but also for his pioneering efforts in expanding Bollywood’s cinematic horizons. Known for his distinctive style and romantic roles, Anand significantly contributed to the industry’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ initiative by showcasing the beauty of India’s Himalayan regions in films.

In the 1960s, as Indian filmmakers began exploring foreign locales, Anand looked closer to home for inspiration. After the mixed response to his ambitious bilingual film “Guide,” he encouraged his brother, Vijay ‘Goldie’ Anand, to explore new, untouched locations. This led them to Sikkim, a picturesque state that had captivated Dev Anand during a previous visit.

During their exploration, they received permission from the then Chogyal, Palden Thondup Namgyal, to shoot “Jewel Thief” (1967) in various locations across Sikkim. The film became notable for its thrilling plot and a star-studded cast, establishing Sikkim as a viable backdrop for Bollywood productions.

Anand’s journey didn't stop there. While attending a royal wedding in Nepal in 1970, he encountered a German filmmaker, which sparked the idea for “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” (1971). With the support of King Mahendra, Anand was able to film extensively in Nepal, contributing to the country’s cinematic presence in India. The film not only made Zeenat Aman a star but also showcased the enchanting landscapes of Nepal.

Anand’s impact extended to Bhutan as well, where he attended the coronation of King Jigme Singye Wangchuk. Though he never filmed there, his efforts helped highlight the Himalayan kingdoms as attractive film locations, inspiring future filmmakers.

Through his innovative vision, Dev Anand played a crucial role in reshaping Bollywood’s narrative by bringing attention to India's scenic beauty and culture, paving the way for countless films set in the Himalayan regions. His legacy continues to influence the industry today.
