A criminal case has been registered against actor Prakash Raj for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through his remarks on the Ramayana during a public programme.

As per officials, the actor, while referring to episodes from the Ramayana, presented them in a satirical manner and incorporated contemporary references, including taxation and regional issues, which drew criticism.

In a video from the event that has since circulated widely on social media, Raj is seen narrating an episode involving Lord Ram, Lakshman and Sita during their exile, adding fictional elements and modern concepts such as GST. He also used colloquial expressions while referring to mythological characters.

During the same programme, the actor also spoke on the ongoing language debate, stating that Hindi should not be imposed on southern states. He further remarked on issues related to personal choice, including food preferences.

Following the circulation of the video, several groups expressed outrage, alleging that the actor had disrespected Hindu beliefs. Some individuals have also called for his removal from an upcoming film project.

Police said a complaint was filed alleging that the remarks had hurt religious sentiments, following which a case was registered. Further investigation is under way.

Raj, known for his outspoken views, has previously been involved in public controversies over his statements on social and political issues.
