Actors Brenden Fraser and Rachel Weisz, the stars of ‘The Mummy’ franchise that first released in 1999, are officially reuniting for a brand new installment in the beloved action-adventure franchise, marking their first on-screen return after more than two decades, according to reports.

Universal has confirmed that the upcoming film is scheduled for release on May 19, 2028. The summer launch date signals the studio’s confidence in the project, with the weekend currently reserved exclusively for the franchise and other major theatrical releases slated alongside it.

The film will be directed by the Radio Silence filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, with a screenplay by David Coggeshall, noted the reports.

While specific plot details remain tightly under wraps, anticipation is already building among longtime fans.

Rachel Weisz originally portrayed Evelyn Carnahan in The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001). However, she did not appear in the third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), where Maria Bello took over the role

At the time, reports suggested that Weisz declined to return due to dissatisfaction with the script and reluctance to portray a version of her character with an adult son.

Her return to the franchise now marks a full-circle moment for fans who cherished the chemistry between Evelyn and Rick O’Connell.

Brendan Fraser famously played adventurer Rick O’Connell in all three original films, which collectively earned approximately $1.8 billion worldwide.

The franchise previously attempted a reboot in 2017, starring Tom Cruise. Although the film earned over $400 million globally, it was widely considered a box office disappointment and failed to launch Universal’s planned “Dark Universe”.
