US asks to India to provide open market for Amazon, Walmart amid tariff talks

Amid ongoing tariff trade talks, the US is now urging India to provide broader market access to American e-commerce giants like Amazon and Walmart as part of ongoing trade discussions between the two nations, as per reports.
According to reports, the US is expected to raise concerns regarding current regulatory restrictions that limit the operational scope of foreign e-commerce firms in India.
Presently, companies such as Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart operate through local entities but are barred from owning inventory or selling directly to consumers. Meanwhile, Indian big companies like Reliance Retail enjoy greater flexibility, including the ability to run physical stores and integrate their supply chains directly with consumer platforms.
While no specific policy demands have been disclosed publicly, the issue is reportedly among the key agenda points in the broader US India trade negotiations, which also encompass sectors such as automobiles, agriculture, and digital services.
Both Amazon and Walmart have yet to issue any official response regarding the latest developments.
