Tesla refunds early India bookings for Model 3, signaling near entry
Tesla has begun refunding reservations for its Model 3 in India, according to emails observed by Bloomberg News.
The refunds are being issued to customers who had booked the car back in 2016, as the older generation of the Model 3 is being discontinued, as per the report. The email assures customers that Tesla will reach out when it finalizes its offerings in India, hinting that a launch is approaching.
This move follows Elon Musk's recent post on X, where he mentioned plans to visit India later this year. The timing coincides with ongoing trade discussions between India and the US, which may involve reducing tariffs on automobiles, potentially reshaping Tesla’s strategy in the country.
The shift in policy comes as Tesla aims to enter India's rapidly growing electric vehicle market, which has an increasingly affluent population.
However, the entry could put pressure on domestic car manufacturers, who rely on local production and employment.
Tesla’s decision to refund reservations marks another step toward what could be a highly anticipated rollout of electric vehicles in the South Asian market.
