Microsoft to cut upto 22,000 jobs in January? Company reacts to layoff claims

A new layoff rumour surrounding Microsoft spread rapidly this week, sparking widespread discussion among employees, tech watchers, and social media users. The speculation began after a report claimed that Microsoft could be planning to cut between 11,000 and 22,000 jobs in January 2026.
If true, such a move would represent one of the largest rounds of layoffs in the company’s history. Unsurprisingly, the claim triggered anxiety online, along with speculation, memes, and unverified insider anecdotes.
According to the report, multiple teams were allegedly at risk, including Azure cloud services, the Xbox gaming division, and global sales units. The purported reason cited was rising costs, particularly Microsoft’s heavy investments in artificial intelligence. The rumour followed a familiar narrative in the tech industry: increasing AI expenditure leading to cost-cutting through workforce reductions.
The speculation gained further traction after a post on social media platform X went viral, claiming Microsoft was “considering massive layoffs in January (between 11,000 and 22,000 positions)” due to growing AI-related costs. The post suggested that Azure, Xbox, and global sales teams were among the primary focus areas.
However, Microsoft has firmly denied the claims.
Responding to the viral post, Frank X. Shaw, Microsoft’s Chief Communications Officer, dismissed the report outright, calling it “100 percent made up, speculative, and wrong.”
At present, the company has not announced any plans for layoffs of the scale described, and no official filings or disclosures support the rumoured job cuts.
