Jio’s Challenge to Musk: Rolls out plan to launch own satellite network

Reliance Industries on Friday announced to directly take on world’s richest Elon Musk as it announced to launch its own satellite network through its tech giant Jio. The proposed move aims to connect India from the skies, targeting the absolute remotest corners of the nation through next-generation satellite telephony.
As detailed in the AGM Speech, the company has set its sights on an audacious new frontier: Satellite Communications. While Jio has already established an unbeatable number-one position on the ground with its massive 5G network, it is now looking upward to bridge the final digital divide.
"There are still remotest villages, island communities, and border outposts where the Jio network cannot reach," Akash Ambani, chairman Reliance Jio stated, adding that satellite connectivity will now serve as the ultimate bridge to the rest of India.
To fast-track this rollout, Jio is adopting a strategic dual approach. The company is actively partnering with leading global constellation providers to lease satellite capacity, ensuring that services become available to consumers at the earliest. Simultaneously, to ensure long-term national security and self-reliance, Jio is evaluating the development of a homegrown, sovereign Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation.
To anchor this massive space ambition, the telecom major is also setting up its own robust ground station infrastructure across India. This will create a flawless, end-to-end satellite broadband ecosystem running from space straight to the ground.
For lakhs of citizens living in cut-off border areas and far-flung pockets, this means satellite phones and handheld devices will soon pulse with high-speed connectivity, straight from an LEO satellite overhead. By driving atma nirbharta in space, Jio is ensuring that no Indian is left behind in the dark, truly taking the nation's digital life to the next level.
