India’s EV market reaches 86 8 lakh cumulative sales  Gujarat ranks 9th overall

India’s electric vehicle (EV) market continued its rapid expansion in FY2026, with annual sales crossing 25 lakh units for the first time, according to the ‘India EV Market’ annual report released by JMK Research & Analytics.

The report highlights strong growth in electric two-wheelers and passenger EVs, while also showing state-wise trends, charging infrastructure expansion and shifting market shares among leading manufacturers.

EV sales cross 25 lakh in FY2026

India recorded total EV sales of 25,15,974 units in FY2026 (April 2025 to March 2026), compared to 20,26,184 units in FY2025, reflecting continued growth in electric mobility adoption.

Year-wise EV sales trends

• FY2022: 4,90,697 units

• FY2023: 12,48,866 units

• FY2024: 17,57,109 units

• FY2025: 20,26,184 units

• FY2026: 25,15,974 units

Cumulative EV sales in India till FY2026 stood at 86,81,938 units.

EV sales increased by 412.73% over five years, rising from 4,90,697 units in FY2022 to 25,15,974 units in FY2026. EV sales in FY2026 rose by 24.17% compared to FY2025.

Category-wise contribution in cumulative EV sales

• Electric two-wheelers: 52.82%

• Electric three-wheelers: 33.47%

• Electric cars: 5.84%

• Electric three-wheeler cargo: 4.31%

• E-buses: 0.19%

• Others: 0.37%

State-wise EV sales trends

In cumulative EV sales till FY2026, Uttar Pradesh led the country with an 18.10% share, followed by Maharashtra at 11.20% and Karnataka at 8.57%.

Gujarat ranked ninth nationally with a 4.01% share of the cumulative 86,84,938 EV units sold till FY2026.

For FY2026 alone

• Uttar Pradesh: 16.25%

• Maharashtra: 11.01%

• Karnataka: 8.58%

Gujarat ranked 14th in FY2026 with a 3.43% share of the total 25,15,974 EV sales recorded during the year.

Electric two-wheeler market share

The electric two-wheeler segment remained the largest contributor to India’s EV market.

Top companies by market share in FY2026

• TVS Motor: 24.40% market share, up 3.57% from FY2025

• Bajaj Auto: 20.41%, up 0.68%

• Ather Energy: 17.38%, up 5.78%

• Ola Electric: 11.50%, down 18.26%

• Hero MotoCorp: 10.21%, up 6.01%

Only Ola Electric market share went down last Financial Year, marred by consumer complaints.

Electric car sales double in FY2026

Electric passenger vehicle sales saw a major jump in FY2026, with total sales rising to 2,06,249 units.

• FY2022: 21,198 units

• FY2023: 54,473 units

• FY2024: 99,833 units

• FY2025: 1,10,748 units

• FY2026: 2,06,249 units

For electric car market share in FY2026, Tata motors led the market, followed by MG and Mahindra:

• Tata Motors: 38.99%

• MG Motors: 26.69%

• Mahindra & Mahindra: 21.41%

• Hyundai: 2.92%

• BYD India: 2.81%

• Kia Motors:1.99%

• BMW: 1.80%

• VinFast – 1.16%

• Maruti Suzuki – 0.68%

• Mercedes – 0.53%

• Citroen – 0.28%

• Volvo – 0.18%

• Tesla – 0.17%

• Others – 0.40%

However, trends show Tata losing its market share, and Mahindra and Hyundai being the only players gaining.

• MG Motor: 26.69% (down 1.47%)

• Mahindra & Mahindra: 21.40% (up 13.69%)

• Hyundai: 2.92% (up 0.60%)

• BYD India: 2.81% (down 0.41%)

Charging infrastructure expands

India had a total of 29,151 EV charging stations operational till December 2025.

Top states by charging stations

• Karnataka: 6,096

• Maharashtra: 4,166

• Uttar Pradesh: 2,316

Gujarat ranked eighth with 1,205 charging stations.

Gujarat EV market trends

Gujarat recorded total cumulative EV sales of 3,47,880 units till FY2026.

The sales in the state increased by 353.12% over five years, rising from 19,038 units in FY2022 to 86,247 units in FY2026.

The report indicates that while Gujarat remains among the leading EV markets in India, its ranking slipped in FY2026 despite strong annual sales growth, even as states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka continued to dominate the national EV landscape.
