The Income Tax Department (I-T) has issued several notices Under Section 142(1), posing unusual questions to taxpayers including monthly kitchen expenses, haircuts, etc.

These notices explicitly mention that the kitchen expenses declared by the taxpayers appear to be low, and therefore, they must disclose the income of each family member to the income tax office. Thousands of such notices demanding unusual details have been issued.

Taxpayers have been asked to provide details of their expenses on purchasing wheat flour, rice, spices, oil, gas, and electricity bills.

Similarly, they have been instructed to disclose how much they spent on buying clothes throughout the year. Moreover, they have been ordered to provide details of expenses incurred on haircuts, social events, and school fees for students.

Taxpayers have also been asked to disclose how much they spent on purchasing notebooks for students, paying rent, maintaining a car, car insurance, and health insurance.

The notices even demand details of how much was spent on polishing footwear. If taxpayers fail to provide individual details of all these expenses or do not furnish proof of the income of other family members, the department will assume that ₹10 lakh was withdrawn for household expenses during the year, as stated in the notice.
