Government hikes excise duty on Petrol & Diesel by ₹2; no change in retail prices
The Government of India has announced a ₹2 per litre hike in excise duty on petrol and diesel, as per a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance (Department of Revenue). The revised rates will come into effect from April 8, 2025.
However, in a clarification posted on X (formerly Twitter), the government assured that this increase will not affect the retail prices of fuel for consumers.

According to the official order, the excise duty on petrol has now been increased to ₹13 per litre, while diesel will attract an excise duty of ₹10 per litre.
Over the last few years, fuel prices in India have seen volatility due to international crude price fluctuations, currency movements, and changes in taxation. The government has previously faced criticism for maintaining high excise duties even when global oil prices dropped.
