Google has announced plans to set up a major artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, marking its largest investment in India so far. The company said the $15 billion (USD) initiative, to be implemented between 2026 and 2030, will bring together advanced AI infrastructure, data center capacity, energy systems, and an expanded fiber-optic network — all within a single integrated facility.

The announcement was made at Bharat AI Shakti, an event hosted by Google in New Delhi, ahead of the upcoming India-AI Impact Summit 2026. The event was attended by Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Nirmala Sitharaman, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, State IT Minister Nara Lokesh, and Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian.

According to Google, the Visakhapatnam AI hub will serve as a regional center for developing and deploying large-scale AI systems, while also supporting digital infrastructure needs across India and beyond. The facility will add gigawatt-scale compute capacity, enabling businesses and researchers to build and scale AI-based solutions with improved speed and efficiency.

A new international subsea gateway will also be developed as part of the project, connecting Visakhapatnam to Google’s global network of terrestrial and subsea cables. The new link is expected to increase data resilience, improve digital connectivity, and enhance India’s capacity for AI-related operations.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, said the new AI hub represents “a landmark investment in India’s digital future” and will help “deliver industry-leading AI infrastructure at scale” while fostering inclusive growth.

Google stated that it will collaborate with partners to develop clean energy generation and transmission systems in Andhra Pradesh to support the hub’s operations, reinforcing its goal of maintaining energy-efficient data centers worldwide.

When operational, the Visakhapatnam AI hub will join Google’s network of AI data centers across 12 countries, supported by research and development efforts from its existing facilities in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune.
