Festive shopping sprees and high-value online sales pushed India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) into uncharted territory this October, with daily payment values crossing the ₹1 lakh crore mark for the first time in the platform's history.

Data released for October 2026 revealed that total transaction values climbed to ₹31.53 lakh crore across 25.47 billion operations. The network processed an average of 822 million transactions every single day, marking the highest volume and value metrics ever recorded by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) infrastructure.

Ticket Sizes Reverse Downward Trend

The festive rush during Navratri and early Diwali shopping drove consumer spending toward larger ticket items, halting a months-long drop in average transaction values. Between April and August, UPI volumes expanded steadily while individual transaction sizes shrank as micro-payments proliferated across local merchants.

That pattern reversed in September and October as shoppers turned to digital channels for big-ticket purchases.

Dividing monthly processing values by overall volume shows the average UPI ticket size rising to ₹1,237.93 in October 2026, up 1.41 per cent from ₹1,220.70 in September 2026.

Industry analysts point out that while overall network value expanded 15.62 per cent year-on-year from October 2025’s ₹27.27 lakh crore, the average ticket size remains 6.03 per cent lower than last year's ₹1,317.39. The annual decline highlights the massive expansion of low-value person-to-merchant (P2M) payments in everyday retail over the past 12 months.

MDR Debate Escalates Amid Record Peak

The unprecedented operational scale comes at a crucial juncture for digital payment providers and banks. The ecosystem remains locked in debate over the proposed Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) framework on select high-value person-to-merchant transactions.

Fintech leaders and payment aggregators have intensified calls for a commercial framework that supports the continuous expansion of digital payment rails. Payment executives argue that maintaining infrastructure reliability during severe demand peaks requires long-term investment, making fee sustainability critical as daily settlement values scale past ₹1 lakh crore.
