Global professional services firm Deloitte is set to significantly scale up its India operations, with plans to add around 50,000 employees, as the company increasingly looks beyond metros to Tier II cities for growth.
According to a Moneycontrol report, Romal Shetty, CEO of Deloitte South Asia, said the firm is actively evaluating Mangaluru as a potential expansion destination, highlighting the city’s strong talent pool and growth potential.
Deloitte currently employs about 1.4 lakh people in India, accounting for nearly one-fourth of its global workforce. Shetty noted that India remains central to Deloitte’s global strategy and that the country continues to dominate the Global Capability Centre (GCC) ecosystem.
Speaking at TiEcon Mangaluru, Shetty underlined that nearly 50% of the world’s GCCs are based in India, with future expansion expected to increasingly flow into Tier II and Tier III cities. While Deloitte has not yet entered Mangaluru, he indicated that it is only a matter of time.
Shetty also suggested the creation of digital economic zones that integrate GCCs, GPU-driven data centres, startups and academic institutions, supported by ready-to-use infrastructure. He emphasised the need to reduce operational bottlenecks, noting that setting up a GCC should ideally take weeks instead of months.
While pointing to challenges such as energy and water requirements for data centres, Shetty said cities like Mangaluru offer strong fundamentals, including skilled manpower and availability of real estate. He further stressed the importance of closer collaboration between universities, industry and government to build a sustainable and competitive ecosystem.
