The parent company of India’s two-wheeler brand of yesteryears — LML — has filed a case against Bajaj Auto for using ‘Freedom’ in naming their newly launched motorcycle.
Bajaj Auto last month launched Freedom 125, India’s first-ever commercial motorcycle utilising Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a fuel, along with petrol.
While the Pune-based automaker was successful in turning heads with the new launch and created enough buzz around the product, it has now caused legal trouble for itself.
LML’s parent company, SG Corporate Mobility, reportedly claimed that ‘Freedom’ has been their trademark since 2002, when the company launched LML Freedom.
LML was transferred to SG Corporate Mobility in 2021, and so was the trademark ‘Freedom’, according to the firm.
Bajaj Freedom 125, on the other hand, is available for purchase in the Indian market today.
Multiple reports suggest that there have been ongoing efforts by SG Corporate Mobility to bring the LML brand back in India, with new scooters and motorcycles.
In 2022, SG also joined hands with another company which formerly used to make Harley Davidson motorcycles in India to manufacture two-wheelers latter’s Haryana plant, reported media.
