Chinese EV-maker BYD to set up $10 bn manufacturing unit in Hyderabad: Reports
After Elon Musk’s Tesla, Chinese EV manufacturer BYD is also looking to establish a manufacturing facility in India, as per reports.
The report suggested that BYD is already scouting for land in Telangana, Hyderabad, for a $10 billion (~₹85,500 crore) investment in the plant, which will have the capacity to produce 6,00,000 vehicles by 2032.
In July 2023, BYD Motors’ plan to set up a $1 billion four-wheeler manufacturing facility in the country was rejected by the Centre over ‘security concerns’, it was reported.
At the time, the Chinese EV giant was looking forward to joining hands with Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL).
In its proposal to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), BYD-MEIL had reportedly made a pitch to manufacture up to 15,000 electric cars a year in the country.
Notably, Olectra Greentech, which is a unit of MEIL, manufactured two electric buses with technical support from BYD Motors.
However, the government was not reportedly keen to give the nod to the Chinese EV manufacturer to invest in India back then.
BYD already has a notable presence in the country with a growing distribution network. The company offers four models – Sealion 7, eMAX 7, Atto 3, and Seal.
BYD India is backed by Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway funded Chinese company BYD Auto.
