Chinese automaker BYD Auto Industry Co Ltd has announced its largest vehicle recall to date, involving more than 1.15 lakh units of its Tang series and Yuan Pro electric vehicles, following a defect investigation by the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).
According to a recall plan filed with the national regulator, two separate recalls have been launched under the “Regulations on the Management of Recall of Defective Automobile Products.”
Under the first recall, 44,535 units of the 2015 Tang series produced between March 28, 2015, and July 28, 2017, are being recalled effective immediately. The vehicles may experience malfunctions in the active discharge function of the drive motor controller, which could, in extreme cases, lead to circuit board corrosion and disable the pure electric drive mode, posing safety risks.
BYD said it will provide a free software update through authorized dealers to modify the discharge method and eliminate potential hazards.
A second recall covers 71,248 Yuan Pro electric vehicles manufactured between February 6, 2021, and August 5, 2022. SAMR found that improper installation of power battery gaskets during manufacturing may allow water ingress during prolonged high-speed driving through water, which could degrade insulation performance and reduce battery output power.
To fix the issue, BYD will reinforce the battery housing with special sealant at no cost to vehicle owners.
The company will notify affected customers through authorized BYD Dynasty dealers by registered mail, phone, and text message. Consumers can also contact the BYD customer service hotline or visit the SAMR Recall Center website for further details or to report defects.
