Air India has reportedly introduced a new ‘basic fare’ category on some domestic flights. Under this fare, passengers will not receive complimentary meals.

The airline reportedly said the new option is being tested on selected routes and is aimed at travelers who want lower ticket prices. The basic fare is available only in Economy Class. It includes a 15 kg checked baggage allowance, 7 kg cabin baggage allowance, and free tea or coffee as per reports. However, passengers will not get free meals during the flight.

Air India reportedly said that passengers can still choose from its other fare options ‘Value, Classic, and Flex’ which continue to offer complimentary meals and other benefits.

The airline added that the Basic Fare gives customers more choice and allows price-conscious travelers to pay only for the services they need. Passengers who choose the basic fare can reportedly buy meals separately up to 24 hours before departure.

Meal options include vegetarian, non-vegetarian, Jain, and diabetic meals. According to Air India, the new fare is part of a pilot project. The airline will decide whether to continue the service after reviewing customer feedback and response.

The move comes as Air India faces rising operating costs due to higher fuel prices and airspace restrictions. The airline has also taken other cost cutting measures, including temporary flight reductions.

Air India, owned by the Tata Group since 2022, reported a loss of more than ₹26,700 crore in the financial year ending March 2026. The losses were revealed in the annual report of Singapore Airlines Group, which is a partner in Air India after the Vistara merger.

The airline reportedly said the basic fare reflects its effort to offer flexible travel options while maintaining full-service choices for passengers who prefer an all-inclusive experience.

In full service airlines, complimentary meals are usually included in the ticket price. By introducing an unbundled fare option, Air India is following a model already common among low cost carriers, where passengers pay separately for additional services such as meals.

If a passenger who has pre purchased a meal is moved to another flight because of a schedule change, the meal booking will be transferred automatically. If the selected meal is not available on the new flight, Air India reportedly said the passenger will receive a full refund for the meal.
