The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has requested the Indian government's assistance in the bribery case involving billionaire Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani.

The SEC reportedly stated that both Gautam Adani and his nephew reside in India, and therefore, they will need help from Indian authorities to effect service under the Hague Service Convention for Service Abroad of Judicial and Extrajudicial Documents in Civil or Commercial Matters.

What is the bribery case?

Adani Group founder and chairman Gautam Adani, along with his nephew Sagar Adani, have received formal summonses in relation to the $265 million (₹2,200 crore) bribery case from the SEC.

On Wednesday, the Eastern District of New York court charged Gautam Adani and seven others with multiple counts of fraud.

They are accused of bribing Indian government officials to secure solar energy supply contracts and of misrepresenting their anti-bribery practices to investors.

According to court documents, they also obstructed a US government investigation into the scheme.

Reports indicate that the summonses were sent to Adani’s Shantivan farm residence in Ahmedabad and Sagar's residence in Bodakdev, Ahmedabad.

“Between 2020 and 2024, senior executives of (i) an Indian renewable-energy company, which was a portfolio company of an Indian conglomerate; (ii) an issuer company that operated in the renewable-energy sector whose securities were traded on a United States exchange,” the court document stated.
