A Vadodara woman lost ₹92,997 after cyber fraudsters allegedly lured her through an Instagram dress advertisement and tricked her into sharing UPI details for a refund.
Dress Order Leads to Fraud
Kalpanaben Kishanbhai Kahar, a resident of Upas Flat on Ajwa Road, told police that she sells sarees from home. On September 6, she came across an Instagram advertisement offering dresses for sale while browsing reels on her mobile phone.
She contacted the WhatsApp number mentioned in the advertisement, following which the seller sent her photographs of the dresses. Kahar selected two dresses worth ₹2,949 and paid the amount through Google Pay using a payment scanner sent by the seller.
The seller told her that the parcel would be delivered within three to five days.
Fraudsters Pose as Refund Manager
When the parcel did not arrive by September 15, Kahar contacted the seller again. She was allegedly told that her order had been cancelled and that a manager would contact her to process the refund.
She later received a call from an unknown number. The caller allegedly gained her confidence and instructed her to enter her UPI PIN on Google Pay under the pretext of processing the refund.
Following the instructions, Kahar’s account was allegedly debited in multiple transactions, with cyber criminals withdrawing a total of ₹92,997.
She subsequently approached the police and filed a complaint over the alleged online fraud.
