Ambaji temple revises its decision on segregated ‘garba’

Just a day after the declaration of segregated garba for men and women, the Ambaji temple has revised its decision. Reportedly, the decision was revised as it met with resistance from the devotees. Now, the garba will be performed just as the previous years, however, devotees and spectators will have to have their identity card with them for entry.

Updated on Oct 15

As the nine-day Navratri festival commences today, the Ambaji Mandir Management in Ambaji town of Gujarat’s Banaskantha district had introduced a change by segregating men and women during the Garba festivities.

Changes were to be implemented by the management

If implemented, this would have been the first time that men and women would not have danced together. Men were to be relocated to perform Garba outside the ‘Pital gate’ of the temple.

In an unprecedented decision, the temple management had declared that Garba performances in Chachar Chowk of Ambaji Mandir would be exclusively reserved for women. Separate entrances were also to be designated for men and women.

Traditionally, devotees gather in Chachar Chowk to partake in the Garba celebrations at Ambaji temple.

According to the earlier reports, the new arrangement was set to take effect from Oct 16, with the temple trust organising Garba within the temple premises on Oct 15 as part of the Navratri festivities.
