Millipede Menace In Amreli’s Savarkundla-Khambha Region: Crores Of Worms Invade Homes, Disrupting Life

Several villages in Amreli district, including Mitiayala, Krishnagarh, Sakarpara and Nanudi Bhad, are grappling with a severe millipede infestation, with residents claiming that crores of the creatures have entered homes and disrupted daily life.

The millipedes have reportedly spread across floors, walls, ceilings, tiled roofs and household items. The infestation has become so severe that residents are unable to sit on the floor even while eating and are being forced to use cots. Food and essential household items also have to be kept at elevated places to prevent the creatures from reaching them.

Infestation Reportedly Worsening For Four Years

According to local residents, the problem has been worsening continuously for the past four years. Villagers claim that the number of millipedes has increased several-fold and that the creatures are now entering residential areas in large numbers.

Residents of the Savarkundla and Khambha talukas say the infestation has disrupted normal life and is causing considerable physical and mental distress.

Villagers Blame Hill Excavation, Mining Activities

Alert citizens and residents of Mitiayala have blamed increasing construction and mining activities in the area for the infestation.

According to villagers, the use of JCB machines for hill cutting and excavation has increased significantly. They suspect that the destruction of natural habitats and changes to the local environment may have driven the millipedes towards human settlements.

However, the exact reason behind the infestation has not yet been scientifically established.

Residents Seek Government Intervention

Local residents have urged the government and district administration to immediately investigate the issue and take concrete measures to address the infestation.

Their key demands include a scientific study by experts to identify the root cause, safe and appropriate insecticide spraying inside and around residential areas, and a high-level assessment of the impact of mining and environmental changes in the hilly region.

Villagers said the massive presence of millipedes has gone beyond what they consider a normal seasonal phenomenon and has become a serious public concern. They are demanding immediate and effective intervention from the administration.
