Zebar School Bus Plunges Into Water-Filled Pit on Ahmedabad’s Mammatpura Road

A Zebar School bus carrying 20 students plunged into a water-filled pit on Mammatpura Road in Ahmedabad after the driver turned back when the road was blocked.

The incident occurred during the monsoon after a pit was dug by municipal authorities alongside the main road. The excavation was reportedly not clearly visible to motorists, raising concerns over road safety and civic works.

Bus Falls Into Pit While Turning Back

The school bus was reportedly returning after a dewatering machine had been placed in the middle of the road to drain water from Sentosa Park.

While turning back because the road was blocked, the bus moved towards the side of the road and fell into the water-filled pit.

All 20 students were inside the bus at the time. Another bus was called following the incident, and the students were sent home.

Excavation Along Main Road Raises Safety Concerns

The pit was reportedly created as part of excavation work carried out by the Municipal Corporation during the current monsoon season.

Residents and motorists have raised concerns that continuous excavation of up to two feet along the main road was not adequately visible to road users.

According to the complaints, motorists had also fallen into the excavated section because the pit was difficult to identify, particularly amid waterlogging.

Dewatering Work Adds to Traffic Hazard

The placement of a dewatering machine on the road further restricted movement in the area and forced vehicles, including the school bus, to turn back.

The incident has once again raised questions over the safety measures adopted around excavation sites and water-drainage works during the monsoon, particularly on roads used by school buses and other vehicles.
