A 23-year-old woman from Ahmedabad’s Meghaninagar died by suicide after allegedly enduring four years of harassment by a man she knew, who repeatedly told her to die, police said. The Sabarmati Riverfront East police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against the accused.

According to the note, the accused, identified as Harsh Jitendrabhai Chauhan, repeatedly taunted her, saying, “You are better off dead. Go and die yourself. Why are you living? You have no right to live.”

The woman, Devanshi, jumped into the Sabarmati river on October 17. Her body was later found near Ghat No. 1. Police recovered a suicide note handwritten by her and her mobile phone during the investigation.

Previous Complaints of Harassment

According to her brother, Pinak Banker, Devanshi and Chauhan had known each other since primary school, when they studied together at Sayona School.

In 2022, Devanshi was admitted to Civil Hospital after a road accident near Memco. Her brother later discovered a photograph of her with Harsh on her WhatsApp status. On questioning her, he learnt that Harsh had taken her phone and uploaded the photograph himself, allegedly as part of his harassment.

About two years ago, Harsh allegedly confronted Devanshi near the Meghaninagar last bus stand and slapped her. The matter reached the police, but the family did not file a formal complaint after Harsh’s parents assured them that he would not harass her again.

Family Had Earlier Intervened

About a year ago, Devanshi reportedly left home and went to the Riverfront after becoming distressed by the alleged harassment. Her family persuaded her to return home.

She had been staying mostly indoors because of complications involving her back and spine following the accident. For the past 25 days, she had been living at her paternal aunt’s house in Vavol, Gandhinagar.

On October 16, Harsh allegedly visited Devanshi’s home and told her father to stop her from messaging his fiancée, Krishna.

The following afternoon, Devanshi left her aunt’s house. Her body was subsequently found in the Sabarmati river.

Suicide Note Cites Repeated Provocation

Police initially registered an accidental death case and began an investigation. During the probe, they recovered a suicide note handwritten by Devanshi that allegedly described the harassment she had faced.

Based on the note and other details that emerged during the investigation, the Sabarmati Riverfront East police registered a case against Harsh for alleged abetment to suicide and began further investigation.
