Woman Sentenced to 10-Years In Jail For Acid Attack on AMTS Conductor

A sessions court in Ahmedabad has sentenced a woman to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh for attacking a 51-year-old AMTS conductor with acid in Kalupur after their relationship ended.

Sessions Judge S R Sangani convicted Mehejbinbanu Chuwara in the case involving the attack on AMTS conductor Rakesh Brahmabhatt.

Court observations

While pronouncing the sentence, the court observed that:

• The victim was on duty at the time of the attack.
• The accused had arrived carrying a flammable liquid in an open container.
• She poured the liquid on the victim, causing serious burn injuries.

Background

According to the prosecution:

• Rakesh Brahmabhatt, a resident of Bapunagar, was employed as a conductor with AMTS.
• Mehejbinbanu Chuwara regularly travelled on his bus, and the two became acquainted.
• Their friendship later developed into a relationship that lasted for about five years.
• The relationship ended about one year before the incident after the victim's wife and family became aware of it.

The prosecution said the accused was upset after the relationship ended.

The attack

According to the prosecution, at around 8.30 pm on January 27, 2023, Mehejbinbanu arrived with a friend and confronted the conductor.

She allegedly questioned him about ending their relationship before pouring a flammable liquid from an open container over him.

The attack left the victim with severe burn injuries to his right eye, his back, his private parts.

Investigation and trial

The Kalupur Police registered a case, arrested the accused and filed a chargesheet before the court.

During the trial:

• Public Prosecutor Vijaysinh Chavda examined eight witnesses.
• The prosecution relied on 15 documentary exhibits.
• The court held that the prosecution had proved the charges against the accused and convicted her before awarding the sentence.
