The ordeal came to light on the evening of May 30, 2026, when Bharati’s cousin alerted her to an active Instagram handle broadcasting old photographs from her 2022 wedding ceremony.
Upon reviewing the profile, Bharati and her family discovered that the account was explicitly set up to target her social circle. The unknown operator had attached fabricated, offensive captions to the wedding pictures and deliberately sent direct messages or left comments on the posts of her relatives, colleagues, and close acquaintances.
"The account was created without my knowledge or consent, purely to defame me among my relatives and ruin my reputation," Bharati stated in her police complaint.
Police Launch Cyber Tracking
Recognizing the coordinated nature of the online harassment, Bharati gathered screenshots, account handles, and relevant URL links before filing a complaint at the Danilimda Police Station.
Investigators are currently coordinating with cybercell officers to trace the digital footprint of the fake profile. Law enforcement officials plan to issue formal requests to Instagram's parent company, Meta, to secure IP logs, registration details, and device identifiers associated with the handle.
As of Wednesday, no arrests have been made, but police officers confirmed that technical analysis is underway to unmask the individual behind the handle.
