An Ahmedabad-based advocate has served a legal notice on PVR INOX's manager at Palladium Mall, alleging that the cinema refused to accept cash payments and compelled him to pay through UPI.

Advocate Utkarsh Dave has sought clarification from the company on the legal and corporate basis for its alleged refusal to accept cash and has given it seven days to respond.

Cash Payment Allegedly Refused For Movie Ticket

According to the notice, Dave visited PVR INOX at Palladium Mall on September 13 to watch Mirzapur: The Movie.

He said he was prepared to pay Rs 475 in cash for the ticket but was informed that cash payments would not be accepted. He consequently made the payment through UPI.

The advocate alleged that cash was refused again when he later purchased food and beverages at the cinema, requiring him to make an additional UPI payment of Rs 420.

Lawyer Questions Cashless Payment Policy

In the legal notice, Dave said he had no objection to the availability of digital payment facilities but questioned a complete refusal to accept cash.

He pointed out that not every customer may have a smartphone, internet access or access to UPI facilities, which could create difficulties if cash is not accepted.

The notice asks PVR INOX to clarify whether it has a written policy prohibiting cash payments and whether customers are informed of such a policy in advance.

CCTV, Payment Records Sought To Be Preserved

Dave has also called on the company to preserve relevant CCTV footage, payment records and internal communications connected with the incident.

The notice warns that if a satisfactory response is not received within seven days, he will initiate proceedings before the Consumer Commission and other appropriate forums.

The allegations in the notice are yet to be adjudicated.
