Two Habitual Thieves Arrested in Ahmedabad’s New Ranip Gold-Chain Snatching Case

The Ahmedabad Police’s Local Crime Branch (LCB) Zone-2 has arrested two alleged habitual thieves for reportedly snatching a gold chain from a 50-year-old woman in New Ranip on September 11.

The woman was returning after an early-morning visit for darshan when the two men allegedly approached her from behind near the Aryavila Flats intersection around 6 am, snatched her gold chain and fled on a motorcycle.

120-Plus CCTV Recordings Examined

The case was registered at Sabarmati police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. It remained undetected until LCB Zone-2 took over the investigation.

Following instructions from senior officers, LCB Zone-2 PI K D Patel formed teams to trace the suspects. Investigators examined more than 120 CCTV recordings covering the route between Aryavila Flats in the Sabarmati-New Ranip area and the suspected residence of the accused in Kubernagar-Sardarnagar.

During the review, police spotted two black Honda Unicorn motorcycles at different points along the route. CCTV footage, technical analysis and local intelligence helped investigators narrow their search to the Kubernagar area.

Police Use Criminal Records to Identify Suspects

The LCB also used e-GujCOP and PINAC software to examine the criminal records and modus operandi of people previously involved in theft and similar offences.

Police identified the suspects as Mayur Dinesh Bajrang, 40, a resident of Santoshinagar in Kubernagar, and Deepak Bhikha Indrekar, 38, from Kubernagar in Sardarnagar.

LCB teams reportedly maintained surveillance in Kubernagar for two consecutive days before arresting both men after confirming their identities.

Gold Chain and Motorcycle Worth ₹1 Lakh Recovered

Police said the accused initially gave unsatisfactory responses during questioning. After detailed questioning and technical interrogation, they allegedly confessed to their involvement in the New Ranip chain-snatching case.

The police recovered the gold chain allegedly stolen from the woman, valued at ₹50,000, along with the Honda Unicorn motorcycle allegedly used in the offence, also valued at ₹50,000.

The total value of the recovered property is ₹1 lakh.

Both Accused Have Previous Cases

According to police, Mayur Bajrang has previously been booked in several cases, including theft-related offences registered at Ankleshwar GIDC and Ramol police stations, as well as cases at Sardarnagar, Airport, Adalaj and DCB police stations.

Deepak Indrekar also has previous cases registered against him, including a theft case at Ellisbridge police station and prohibition-related offences at DCB and Sardarnagar police stations.

Police said further investigation is underway to establish whether the duo was involved in other chain-snatching or theft cases in Ahmedabad.
