Tragic Collapse In Ahmedabad: 80-Year-Old House Crumbles In Khadia, One Dead And Three Injured

A woman lost her life and three others suffered severe injuries after an 80-year-old, three-storey dilapidated building collapsed in the congested Khadia area of Old Ahmedabad on Sunday afternoon.

The sudden collapse trapped four residents under a mountain of debris, triggering an intense three-hour rescue operation by the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services in the narrow lanes of Laxminarayan ni Pol.

High-Stakes Rescue Mission In Narrow Alleyways

The incident unfolded at house number 1163 near Khadia Char Rasta when the aging structure caved in without warning. Upon receiving the emergency call, the fire department rushed six fire tenders and 25 personnel to the spot.

Navigating the extremely tight pol alleyways proved a formidable challenge, as heavy machinery and large rescue vehicles could not enter the narrow passage. Firefighters had to clear the heavy rubble manually using hand tools to reach the victims trapped underneath.

Rescue teams pulled three survivors from the debris in critical condition and immediately rushed them to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment:

Fatal Trapping Under Debris

As operations continued, responders learned that another resident, 45-year-old Sonalben Jigarkumar, remained missing beneath the pile. Rescuers mounted a focused search through the concrete fragments.

After a painstaking three-hour effort, firefighters located Sonalben, but she was declared dead at the scene. Her body was subsequently retrieved and sent for a post-mortem examination.

Corporation Warning Ignored

Preliminary investigations revealed that the three-storey structure was over eight decades old and in a precarious condition. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had previously issued an official notice warning the occupants about the unsafe state of the building prior to the deadly collapse.
