Ahmedabad: A late-night surprise inspection conducted by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Hospital Committee Chairperson Dr Chandni Patel at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Institute of Medical Sciences and Research has stirred up a fresh political controversy. Details of the surprise check that was carried out nearly 15 days ago around 9:00 PM, were disclosed only recently, raising serious eyebrows within administrative and political circles over its delayed release and selective focus.

During her late-night rounds across the flagship civic hospital, Dr Patel reportedly noticed cleanliness lapses in several wings. She immediately directed hospital authorities to issue formal notices and slap penalties on the private housekeeping agencies responsible for sanitation.

However, the move has triggered intense internal debates inside the civic body, with insiders questioning why the inspection zeroed in strictly on sanitation while completely ignoring long-standing complaints about doctor shortages and nursing staff attendance.

QR Code Complaint System Rolled Out for Patients

Following the inspection controversy, hospital authorities announced plans to implement a QR-code-based digital grievance mechanism to improve accountability.

Under the upcoming system, QR codes will be displayed prominently across various wards, OPD areas, and corridors. Patients and visitors can scan the codes using their smartphones to immediately register complaints regarding cleanliness, infrastructure maintenance, or operational glitches.

The digital complaints will be routed directly to responsible department heads to ensure time-bound resolution, mirroring the AMC's existing civic complaint portal.

The internal fallout from the surprise inspection has also revived discussions surrounding previous leadership of the AMC Hospital Committee. Senior BJP sources revealed that an earlier committee chairperson had faced grave corruption allegations involving financial kickbacks from private service contractors.
