Around 350 patients are admitted to Ahmedabad’s Asarwa Civil Hospital every day, but a shortage of surgical gloves has raised serious concerns over infection control and patient safety. According to sources, the hospital has been facing a severe shortage of gloves for nearly a week, leaving doctors and nursing staff struggling to manage routine medical procedures.

Doctors Forced To Manage With Limited Supplies

Surgical gloves are a basic requirement in operation theatres, maternity wards and other areas where sterile procedures are carried out. Medical protocols require fresh, sterile gloves to be used for such procedures to minimise the risk of infection.

However, amid the reported shortage, medical staff are allegedly being forced to wash and reuse gloves that have already been used, raising concerns over the possibility of contamination and infection.

Sources said a limited quantity of gloves reached the hospital over the past two days. However, given the hospital’s high patient load and daily consumption, the supply remains inadequate.

The shortage has also raised questions about the hospital’s medical supply management. With Ahmedabad Civil Hospital operating on a large scale and catering to patients from across Gujarat as well as neighbouring states, questions are being raised over why an adequate emergency stock of essential surgical supplies was not maintained.
