Sterling City Roads Flooded Again Despite Drainage Work, Residents Question Civic Action

Roads in Sterling City’s Sector-A and Sector-B in Bopal were waterlogged after around 45 minutes of rain, with the water reaching the plinths of several houses and raising fears of water entering homes.

The fresh waterlogging has raised questions over the effectiveness of drainage work carried out in the area after residents had earlier reported rainwater entering houses.

Drainage Work Fails To Prevent Waterlogging

Residents said drainage work was undertaken in Sterling City Sector-A and B after earlier instances of waterlogging. During the work, sewerage pipes were laid in Sector-A under the Thaltej ward and connected to the main sewerage line.

However, residents alleged that some drains meant to carry rainwater were blocked during the work. They claimed that the contractor's workers were repeatedly informed that blocking the rainwater drains could worsen waterlogging, but no adequate corrective action was taken.

Residents Raise Fresh Concerns

Residents said the disruption to the rainwater drainage route has resulted in water accumulating on the roads. They added that even after waterlogging following rain on Sunday, they had requested that a drain cover be opened to facilitate drainage.

According to residents, only a portion of the cover was lifted, after which the problem persisted. With the roads flooded again following Monday's rain, residents are questioning why the water is still not draining despite the earlier drainage work.

Responsibility Falls Between Two Wards

The road between Sterling City Sector-A and B falls along the boundary of the Thaltej and Bodakdev wards. Residents said this has also raised questions about which ward is responsible for addressing the waterlogging.

They have urged officials and elected representatives from both wards to visit the spot, assess the situation jointly and take responsibility for finding a solution instead of passing the issue between departments.

Residents Seek Permanent Solution

Residents of Shyam Bungalow and Sterling City Sector-A and B said waterlogging has been a longstanding problem in the area. They are now demanding a permanent solution, arguing that temporary measures such as opening drain covers during rainfall will not resolve the issue.

Residents have urged councillors and civic officials from both wards to inspect the site and identify how and how quickly rainwater can be drained from the area. They said a permanent drainage arrangement is needed to prevent the repeated flooding of roads and the threat of water entering homes.
