The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Tuesday sealed the canteen at St Xavier’s School after a food-safety inspection found allegedly unhygienic conditions, 12 food items being used beyond their expiry dates, absence of a food licence or registration and workers handling food without gloves.
According to an inspection notice issued by the AMC’s Food Safety Department on August 18, the canteen operating on the St Xavier’s Loyola School campus near Vijay Cross Road in Naranpura was closed under provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSSA).
The notice, issued to the canteen operator, stated that the kitchen was found to be lacking in required hygiene standards. Officials also found that the canteen management had not produced its food licence or registration during the inspection.
The inspection further found that workers inside the canteen were not wearing gloves while handling food. Officials also noted that the utensils and other kitchen equipment were dirty.
12 Food Items Found Beyond Expiry Date
Most significantly, 12 food items were found to have been used after their expiry dates, according to the notice issued by the civic body.
Taking note of the violations, the AMC said the premises had been closed in the interest of public health and directed the operator not to reopen the canteen.
The notice also warned that operating the establishment without the required licence could invite further action under applicable provisions of food-safety law.

AMC Steps Up School Canteen Inspections
The action was taken following instructions from the AMC’s in-charge Additional Medical Officer of Health and designated officer. Food Safety Officer Rajeshwar Pawar was among the officials involved in the inspection.
The civic body has intensified inspections of school canteens across Ahmedabad following a recent incident in which a piece of glass was allegedly found in food served at a school canteen.
As part of the ongoing drive, AMC Food Safety officials also inspected the canteens at Podar International School, Chandkheda, and Adani Vidya Mandir, Makarba. Food samples from the two premises were collected and sent for further testing.
Officials said the inspections are aimed at checking hygiene conditions, the quality of food served to students, proper storage of raw materials, expiry dates and compliance with mandatory food-safety licensing requirements.
The AMC said inspections would continue at other schools across the city and that action would be taken against establishments found violating food-safety norms.
The sealing notice issued to the St Xavier’s School canteen specifically recorded that the premises had been closed on August 18, 2026, and cautioned the operator against reopening it without complying with applicable requirements.
