Spine problems are increasing among young people due to sedentary lifestyles, excessive mobile and laptop use, obesity, and stress. The share of patients aged 20 to 39 with spine problems rose from 21% in 2022-23 to 29% in 2025-26, according to the data mentioned in a report from Ahmedabad. Doctors say most patients can recover with proper treatment and do not need surgery.
Why Are Young People Facing Spine Problems?
Earlier, spine problems were more common among people above the age of 50. However, the trend is changing, with teenagers and young adults also reporting back and neck pain. Sitting in one place for long hours, driving for extended periods, carrying heavy bags, and not exercising regularly are among the major reasons behind the rise.
Doctors have also warned that mental stress can contribute to spine pain. This type of pain, linked to psychological stress, is known as psychosomatic pain. Experts say people who spend many hours working on mobile phones and laptops should pay attention to their posture and include regular movement in their daily routine.
Patient Data Shows a Change in Age Groups
The report shows that the share of spine patients aged 20 to 39 increased over two years, while the share of patients aged 40 to 59 declined.
- Ages 20–39: The share of patients increased from 21% in 2022-23 to 29% in 2025-26.
- Ages 40–59: The share decreased from 48% to 42% during the same period.
Patients above 60 accounted for 28% of cases, while those below 20 made up around 2%. The data highlights that spine problems are no longer limited to older people.
Most Patients Do Not Need Surgery
Dr. Piyush Mittal, director of the Spine Hospital at Civil Medicity in Ahmedabad, said the number of young patients with spine problems is increasing. He added that surgery is required in only around 10% of cases.
Dr Tarak Patel also said that more than four out of every 10 new patients are between 20 and 45 years old. According to him, 94% of these patients were treated without hospital admission. Doctors say early diagnosis and proper treatment can help manage pain and address its underlying cause.
How Can Spine Problems Be Prevented?
Doctors advise people to stay active, exercise regularly, and avoid sitting in the same position for long periods. People who use mobile phones and laptops for extended hours should take breaks and perform neck and back exercises. Children should also be encouraged to play outdoors and remain physically active.
People who carry heavy bags should use both shoulders to distribute the weight evenly. Drivers should slow down when passing over potholes and maintain a regular exercise routine. Doctors recommend seeking medical advice if back or neck pain continues instead of ignoring the symptoms.
