The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will investigate the role of its officials as well as contractors following a series of accidents in the city over the past 15 days, including two deaths at the Sola Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and an incident in which a girl fell into a drain in Piplaj.
The AMC Standing Committee has directed officials to establish whether negligence or lapses in safety arrangements contributed to these incidents. Standing Committee Chairman Kamlesh Patel said responsibility should not rest solely with contractors and that officials overseeing the work must also be held accountable if they are found to have failed in their duties.
AMC to examine safety lapses at Sola STP
Patel said the inquiry would examine whether prescribed safety standards were followed during work at the Sola STP, including welding operations. Officials will check whether workers had access to the necessary protective equipment and whether they used it correctly.
The investigation will also establish whether the accidents could have been prevented had adequate safety arrangements been in place.
Patel stressed that action against contractors alone would not be sufficient. The role of the officials responsible for supervising the work must also be examined, particularly if any negligence is established.
The Standing Committee has therefore asked the AMC to ensure that investigations into such incidents cover both contractors and the officials concerned.
Kids City at Kankaria to get six new attractions
In a separate decision, the Standing Committee approved plans to expand and modernise Kids City at Kankaria Lakefront, with a focus on introducing children to science, technology and sports through interactive activities.
The proposed additions include:
- A chocolate factory
- A space exploration centre
- A 'Khelo India' sports academy
- A renewable energy technology centre
- An aerodynamics and flight science laboratory
- A drone laboratory
The committee has also approved the upgrading and modernisation of existing activities at the facility.
The new attractions are intended to give children more opportunities to explore scientific concepts, learn about emerging technologies and participate in recreational activities.
